AhhhhBliss
It's a lovely day here. My birthday. Just made my cake, not because my husband's too mean to get me one, but because what I want cannot be found at a bakery.
White cake with caramel icing. The icing is the main event here. It's a recipe that one of my grandmother's cousins gave to her. She gave it to another cousin who baked professionally. That good lady made my birthday cakes when I was growing up, and I remember her every time I make it. It is not easy, being made of white sugar and cream, and must be cooked with the precision of a chemist's experiment. Two degrees too high, and it falls off the cake. Two degrees too low, and it's gooey.
There are three dead Germans and one dead Brit staring at that cake.
Tonight, guys. For now, go eat something else.
Robert: Subway??
Perfect. Go for it.

Manni: She mentioned cake. I'm there.
Lothi: CARAMEL Frosting, too. Count me in.
Ossi: I'll bring some good brandy to go with said cake.
*dies laughing* Why am I NOT surprised them boys like... SUBWAY.... LOL LOL LOL
do me a flave and thank Bertie one more time for bringing Pete's family over here on the Olympic, would ya? He did the Thing That Is Worse Than Mustard Gas - cleaned the cat box. LOL!
Have a great birthday!

Red, I hate to tell you, but Bert was never an officer on the Olympic. If Pete's folks met him, then they most likely crossed on the Oceanic pre-WWI, or on the Celtic post war. He quit the White Star Line February of 1920. And if they crossed on the Olympic, then they must have met another equally cool WSL officer.
The fact that he was NOT assigned to Olympic was a factor in his resignation after WWI. He saw it as an indication that he was going to be "Irished", assigned as Chief Officer to lesser and lesser ships of the line, rather than eventually receiving his own command. He believed that it had to do with his having been on the Titanic, his distinctive name being inextricably linked with the disaster.

Mebbe it wasn't Bertie, if it indeed was the Olympic. I can't remember.
Glad you had one hell of a good birthday!

Oceanic was in service 1899 through 1914. Olympic had a longer career-- 1911-1935.
